Minister of State Kent Congratulates People of El Salvador on Occasion of Their Independence Day

(No. 256 - September 15, 2009 - 2:30 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today issued the following statement congratulating the people of El Salvador as they celebrate their country’s Independence Day:

“Canada extends congratulations to the people of El Salvador as they celebrate the 188th anniversary of their country’s independence. I had the opportunity to visit El Salvador twice in 2009. In January, I visited El Salvador as part of my first official visit to the region as minister of state for the Americas. I was pleased to have occasion to return to attend the June 1 inauguration of President Mauricio Funes.

“While there, I reiterated Canada’s commitment to expanding its engagement throughout the Americas. I look forward to working closely with El Salvador to ensure a safer, more prosperous and democratic Central America.

“The ties between Canada and El Salvador are further strengthened by the 150,000-strong Salvadoran diaspora, one of the largest in Canada of any Latin American country.”
