Minister of State Kent Congratulates People of Costa Rica on Occasion of Their Independence Day

(No. 257 - September 15, 2009 - 2:40 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today issued the following statement congratulating the people of Costa Rica as they celebrate their country’s Independence Day:

"Canada extends congratulations to the people of Costa Rica as they celebrate the 188th anniversary of their country’s independence. Canada greatly values its relationship with Costa Rica, and I look forward to continuing cooperation with one of our closest partners in the region.

"In June, I had the opportunity to experience Costa Rica’s warm hospitality and beautiful scenery. I witnessed first-hand the efforts of the country’s government and people to achieve greater prosperity, peace and security. The Government of Costa Rica has been a key partner in promoting human rights and democracy throughout the hemisphere. Canada supports these efforts, and we look forward to building on our excellent relationship.

"Canada’s bilateral merchandise trade with Costa Rica reached $484.3 million in 2008. Our strong and growing commercial relations have been supported by the Canada-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement and agreements on labour cooperation and the environment, which aim to create economic opportunities for both Costa Rica and Canada."
