Canada Condemns Bombings in Beirut

November 20, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada strongly condemns the bombings that took place yesterday in Beirut.

“This heinous terrorist attack, which targeted diplomatic premises, killed 23 people and wounded nearly 150 others. Canada mourns this senseless loss of life and sends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected.

“Canada condemns all attempts to destabilize Lebanon, and draw the Syrian civil war into the country. Canada encourages Lebanese leaders to resume the national dialogue to guarantee peace and security and commends Lebanon’s continued resilience and efforts to remain out of regional conflicts.

“Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada continues to advise against all travel to the southern suburbs of Beirut due to the increased threat of terrorist attacks. Canadians who choose to travel to Lebanon should ensure that their travel documents are up to date and register themselves and family members with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service in order to receive the latest advice from the Embassy of Canada to Lebanon.”
