Minister Fast Meets with Aung San Suu Kyi

September 3, 2012 - Burma - International Trade Minister Ed Fast meets with Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of Burma’s National League for Democracy, in the capital, Naypyidaw, where the two discussed Canada’s soon to be opened embassy in Burma. In July the Government of Canada announced that it would establish an embassy in Burma, and today Minister Fast announced that a full-time trade commissioner will be deployed there.

Canada is encouraged by the changes Burmese authorities have undertaken and will continue to support and monitor developments closely. Canadian policy toward Burma will continue to focus on improving democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canadian companies are leaders in corporate social responsibility, with considerable experience in fostering and promoting sustainable development and responsible business practices.

On March 8, 2012, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird presented Aung San Suu Kyi with a certificate recognizing her honorary Canadian citizenship, which was conferred upon her by the Parliament of Canada in 2007.
