Canada-Nigeria Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement

Background

Canada and Nigeria began and completed Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) negotiations in April 2013 in Abuja, Nigeria. The Agreement was signed by Canada’s Minister of Development, Christian Paradis and the Nigerian Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Olutoyin Aganga on May 6, 2014 in Abuja, Nigeria.

A bilateral FIPA will provide greater predictability and certainty for Canadian investors considering investment opportunities in Nigeria. Canada’s objective in entering these negotiations is to secure a comprehensive, high-quality agreement which will protect investors through the establishment of a framework of legally binding rights and obligations.
