Bilateral relations

Canada and Bulgaria maintain positive bilateral relations as NATO Allies, as well as economic partners under the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

Bulgaria has had a series of inconclusive elections since 2021. The absence of a stable government has limited Bulgaria’s capacity for external engagement.

Canada’s political and commercial relations with Bulgaria are managed through the Embassy of Canada in Bucharest, Romania. Canada has an Honorary Consul in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Bulgaria has an Embassy in Ottawa, a Consulate General in Toronto, and Honorary Consuls in Montreal and Richmond, B.C.

Trade relations

The Canada–European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement provides opportunities to grow the bilateral economic relationship between Canada and the Republic of Bulgaria. In 2023, two-way merchandise trade totaled $534 million, comprising exports of Canadian merchandise to Bulgaria of $220 million and merchandise imports from Bulgaria of $315 million.
