Marriage abroad
Refer to Marriage abroad.
Marriages that are legally performed in a foreign country are usually valid in Canada, and you do not need to register them in Canada.
Information regarding the marriage process in Indonesia should be obtained from the local Civil Registry office or from the Indonesian Embassy in Canada if you are in Canada.
Apart from various local requirements, the Embassy is aware that the Indonesian Civil Registry requires a certificate from foreign Embassies stating that there is no objection to the marriage of their citizens.
Please note that the Embassy does not issue a Certificate of Non-impediment to marriage to either Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Instead, the Embassy issues a Statement Letter in lieu of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad. To date, this letter has been accepted by the Indonesian authorities with no difficulties.
To apply for this letter, you must submit the following documents in original or certified copy:
- Passport/Travel document from both parties (original or certified copy by a notary);
- Birth certificate (if born in Canada) or Citizenship card/Certificate (if born outside Canada) of the Canadian citizen (original or certified copy by a notary);
- Permanent Resident card for non-Canadian citizens holding Permanent Resident status (original or certified copy by a notary);
- Divorce document, if the Canadian citizen was married before (original or certified copy by a notary);
- Death certificate, if the spouse of the Canadian citizen passed away (original or certified copy by a notary);
- Statutory declaration from the Canadian citizen(s). Note that this declaration should be signed before a consular official at the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta. Please contact us in advance for appointment. If you choose to submit the application by mail, note that the declaration must be signed before a notary;
- Power of Attorney with the Canadian citizen's original signature, if a third party (representative/fiancé, etc.) will submit the application and/or pick up the letter on behalf of the Canadian citizen.
