Regarding marriage in Tunisia: We recommend that any Canadian citizens who planning to get married in Tunisia first verify the procedures to follow, the documents required and any applicable fees from the appropriate Tunisian authorities (municipalities or local lawyers).

The Tunisian authorities will ask you to submit a certificate stating that there is no impediment to your marriage "Certificat de non-empêchement". As this document is not required by Canadian Law, a Declaration in lieu of a Certificat de non- empêchement will be issued. This certificate must be issued by the Canadian Embassy in Tunisia, during the consular service hours to clients. Fees in the amount of $50 apply. Process time is 3 business days. You will have to present:

  • Your Canadian passport
  • certified true copy of your birth certificate (if born in Canada)
  • certified true copy of your citizenship certificate (if born outside of Canada)
  • statutory declaration of present marital status, your permanent address, the name and citizenship of future spouse
  • certified true copy of divorce certificate/final judgment of divorce or of the former spouse’s death certificate, if previously married
