Embassy closure
The Canadian Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, is currently closed, but continues to operate remotely from the Canadian Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia until conditions allow for its reopening. Long-standing diplomatic relations with Libya are ongoing and Canada remains committed to support the Libyan people in their efforts to build a stable and secure democracy.

The Embassy of Canada to Tunisia in Tunis provides services for Canadian Citizens on an appointment-only basis. Please add your email and phone number when you book your appointment.
Regarding marriage in Tunisia: We recommend that any Canadian citizens who planning to get married in Tunisia first verify the procedures to follow, the documents required and any applicable fees from the appropriate Tunisian authorities (municipalities or local lawyers).
The Tunisian authorities will ask you to submit a certificate stating that there is no impediment to your marriage "Certificat de non-empêchement". As this document is not required by Canadian Law, a Declaration in lieu of a Certificat de non- empêchement will be issued. This certificate must be issued by the Canadian Embassy in Tunisia, during the consular service hours to clients. Fees in the amount of $50 apply. Process time is 3 business days. You will have to present:
- Your Canadian passport
- certified true copy of your birth certificate (if born in Canada)
- certified true copy of your citizenship certificate (if born outside of Canada)
- statutory declaration of present marital status, your permanent address, the name and citizenship of future spouse
- certified true copy of divorce certificate/final judgment of divorce or of the former spouse’s death certificate, if previously married
Once your documents ready, please book your appointment online in order to present your documents in person. Services are not offered by mail or fax.
Notarial services
The Embassy of Canada to Tunisia in Tunis provides services for Canadian Citizens on an appointment-only basis. Please add your email and phone number when you book your appointment.
Note: Documents must be in English or French, or accompanied by an official translation in English or French.
Services are not offered by email or fax - only in person.
Authentication/Attestation (certify the document signature, the position of an official and the seal are genuine):
- Documents issued in Canada must be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa before the office will certify the documents (fees apply).
- Clients requiring information about authenticating documents while outside of Canada, refer to Authentication of documents.
Certified copy (certify the document is a true copy of the original):
- Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
- Government-issued identification requiring a certified true copy (fees apply).
Witness a signature (consular officer witnesses a signature):
- Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
- Government-issued identification requiring a witnessed signature (fees apply).

Your passport application will be processed within 20 working days, to which delivery times by post will be added (+/-10 working days).
