Criminal record checks
The High Commission of Canada in Pretoria does not process Criminal Records Checks for the RCMP in Canada.
Information on the requirements for applying for a Police Clearance Certificate can be found at Criminal record checks.
The Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services will only accept electronic fingerprint submissions for civil purposes.
You are required to contact an accredited fingerprint company authorised to submit fingerprints to the RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS) who will digitize ink fingerprints and submit them electronically to the RCMP.
Accredited fingerprint companies readily advertise their services over the Internet and can provide a copy of their RCMP Letter of Accreditation.

Marriage abroad

You cannot get married at a Canadian embassy or consulate in a foreign country. Canadian consular officials do not perform marriage ceremonies, and they do not have to attend your marriage.
The High Commission of Canada in Pretoria does not issue certificates of Non-Impediment to Marriage. We may issue a Statement in lieu of Certificate of Non-impediment to Marriage Abroad stating that we do not issue such certificates. You must submit the following (note that we require the physical documents, no email copies are accepted):
- a Canadian passport
- a certified true copy of birth certificate (if born in Canada)
- a certified true copy of citizenship certificate (if not born in Canada)
- a signed and witnessed (notary or commissioner of oaths) statutory declaration stating your:
- Full name
- Present marital status
- Permanent address (P.O. boxes are not accepted)
- the name/citizenship of your future spouse
- a certified true copy of divorce certificate/final judgment of divorce or of the former spouse’s death certificate, if previously married
- the fee of CAD 80
Sending documents via courier
Documents will be accepted by courier services delivery only (Mon-Fri between 08H00 -16H00).
Provide the following when using this service:
- Applicants full name and surname
- Dates of birth,
- Physical address where the completed documents are to be couriered
- Contact person (if different from applicant) with cell phone number
The processing time for this statement is 7 business days.
It is important to note that this statement may not be sufficient proof of a non-impediment to marriage for some foreign governments, including South Africa. You may be required to obtain the document from Canada.
Notarial services
The office provides the following notarial services, by appointment only, to Canadian citizens and, in limited cases, to non-Canadian citizens if the documents are intended for use in Canada. Note: Documents must be in English or French, or accompanied by an official translation in English or French.
Authentication/Attestation (certify the document signature, the position of an official and the seal are genuine):
- Documents issued in Canada must be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa before the office will certify the documents (fees apply).
- Witness a signature on a Statement in lieu of certificate of non-impediment to marriage abroad form (fees apply).
- Clients requiring information about authenticating documents while outside of Canada, refer to Authentication of documents.
Certified copy (certify the document is a true copy of the original):
- Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
- Government-issued identification requiring a certified true copy (fees apply).
Witness a signature (consular officer witnesses a signature):
- Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
- Government-issued identification requiring a witnessed signature (fees apply).
Note: Complete all documents before booking an appointment. Sign all documents in front of the consular officer.
