Bilateral relations
Canada and Tajikistan established diplomatic relations in 1992. On March 28, 2022, Canada and Tajikistan marked their 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Tajikistan established an embassy in Washington, D.C, in 2003, which also covers Canada although without formal accreditation. The Canadian embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan is accredited to Tajikistan.
Tajikistan is a strong partner for Canada in many multilateral forums and international organizations, including the United Nations.
Trade relations
Canadian commercial relations with Tajikistan are limited; however, over the last few years, some Canadian companies have been active in Tajikistan, mostly in the mining (gold and silver) and infrastructure sectors. In 2020, Canada’s merchandise exports (mainly food products and base metal products) to Tajikistan were valued at $3.1 million and imports to Canada from Tajikistan were valued at $102,146.

Development
Canada stood by Tajikistan with necessary emergency assistance, including in response to the global COVID‑19 pandemic. The Canadian government is proud to support a major health and education program, implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation, aimed at improving basic health outcomes in the country.
The Embassy of Canada to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan manages the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, through which funding assistance is provided to local NGOs active in Tajikistan.
