Adoption and surrogacy

The Adoption Unit of the Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago handles all matters concerning legal adoption of children.

Birth abroad

Refer to Children born outside of Canada.

If your child is born outside of Canada, you do not need to register the birth in Canada.

All Public Health facilities provide services free of charge to local and foreign nationals.

An initial (temporary) birth certificate is provided at the hospital by the District Registrar for that area. The final (polymer) birth certificate can be received through an application online at the website of the Registrar General’s Office of the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

All applications and supporting documents can be submitted in-person or via the on-site drop-box, mail or courier. Include your online payment receipt.

If you are using the drop-box facility, please ensure that the required documents are certified by a lawyer, notary public or commissioner of affidavits.

Notarial services

Consular officials do not provide any legal advice or represent a person in court. The office provides the following notarial services to Canadian citizens and, in limited cases, to non-Canadian citizens if the documents are intended for use in Canada.

Note: Documents must be in English or French, or accompanied by an official translation in English or French.

Authentication/Attestation (certify the document signature, the position of an official and the seal are genuine):

Certified copy (certify the document is a true copy of the original):

  • Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
  • Government-issued identification requiring a certified true copy (fees apply).

Witness a signature (consular officer witnesses a signature):

  • Documents presented by a Canadian citizen or a non-Canadian citizen for use in Canada; exceptions apply (fees apply).
  • Government-issued identification requiring a witnessed signature (fees apply).

For any other documents, notarial services are provided at a nominal cost by Notaries Public, Commissioners of Affidavits and most Law Firms.

Payment method

  • TT Dollar or Canadian Dollar Bank Manager’s Cheque made payable to the: “High Commission of Canada.”
  • Submit a completed credit card authorization form with the application. The payment will be processed by the Consular Assistant and receipt will be sent via email.
  • Cash payments are not accepted.

Passport services

You can pay online for all your passport services before completing your passport application.

Pensions and retirement

Any documents required to support an application for CPP or OAS can be copied and certified at the Consular Services section of the High Commission of Canada, Port of Spain. This service is provided free of charge.
