Canada’s statement on the recent vote by the Venezuelan National Assembly to dissolve the interim government

January 6, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

“Canada is closely following the events in Venezuela, including the recent vote by its National Assembly to dissolve the interim government. Canada respects and recognizes the National Assembly’s decision to extend its authority as it is the last remaining democratically elected institution in Venezuela, elected by the Venezuelan people in 2015. Canada also respects the decision taken to change the structure of the interim government.

“Canada reiterates its support for the people of Venezuela as they work toward a peaceful return to democracy. This can only be achieved by holding free and fair elections and working to re-establish democratic order and the rule of law.

“Canada strongly supports the Venezuelan-led negotiating process taking place in Mexico City. We urge the parties involved to continue their discussions and build on the recent humanitarian agreements finalized in November 2022 to ensure that a clear set of rules and timelines are established for free and fair elections.

“Canada will continue to work with partners in Venezuela and the international community to call for the release of unjustly detained political prisoners, respect for freedom of expression and the addressing of human rights abuses in that country.”
