Statement by Media Freedom Coalition members in Albania to mark World Press Freedom Day

May 3, 2024

The Ambassadors and embassies in Albania from members of the Global Media Freedom Coalition, plus representatives of the United Nations, the European Union and OSCE, met to mark World Press Freedom Day to reaffirm our commitment to freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

We reiterated our support for Albania to continue to develop a media environment where journalists can investigate and report the truth factually, without fear or intimidation. An independent media is essential for a well-performing democracy.  We underscored the importance of journalists reporting professionally and upholding standards of conduct, including averting personal, political or financial interests.  We encourage Albanian media to foster inclusive representations and avoid racism and bias.  We embrace the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in facing the global environmental crisis.

We discussed concerns at recent reports of attacks and abuse directed at journalists, including gender-based violence, and restated our commitment to speaking out when this takes place. Attacks on journalists or on the free press can never be justified.

As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we applaud the bravery of journalists in reporting the truth and in enabling citizens to receive accurate information. We call on politicians, law enforcement authorities, business interests and all of those with influence to ensure journalists can carry out this vital work freely.
