Canada-Türkiye Exploratory Free Trade Discussions

Background information

In October 2009, Türkiye indicated its interest in pursuing an FTA with Canada, and officials met informally in Ottawa in February 2010 to better understand their respective interests in possible free trade negotiations. Public consultations on this initiative were initiated in August 2010.

Formal exploratory talks, which took place between 2010 and 2013, allowed both sides to gain a better understanding of each other's approaches to free trade negotiations. While there was not sufficient common ground to pursue ambitious and comprehensive free trade negotiations at the time, lines of communication between Canada and Türkiye remain open. In 2019, Canada and Türkiye held the first Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting in Istanbul.

Consultations

On August 7, 2010, the Government launched public consultations on possible Canada-Türkiye FTA agreement negotiations with Canadian provinces and territories, along with businesses, industry associations and the general public. For more information on these consultations, please visit:
