Prohibitions
The prohibition on the export of arms and related material to any person in Rwanda has been lifted.
Background
On May 17, 1994, acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 918 imposing an arms embargo against Rwanda in response to ongoing violence in Rwanda.
The United Nations Rwanda Regulations implemented the decisions of the Security Council in Canadian domestic law.
On July 10, 2008, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1823 (2008) terminating the arms embargo on Rwanda in light of the steps towards the restoration of peace and stability in the African Great Lakes region. Accordingly, the United Nations Rwanda Regulations were repealed on June 4, 2009, with the entry into force of the Regulations Repealing the United Nations Rwanda Regulations.
