Argentina - Universal Periodic Review

Session examined: 42nd session of the Universal Periodic Review
Date reviewed: January 23, 2023

Recommendation

Canada commends Argentina’s creation of the Ministry of Women, Genders and Diversity in 2019, the legalization of elective abortion in 2021 and its new national identity system for persons who identify as non-binary.

Canada recommends that Argentina:

  1. Continue addressing sexual and gender-based violence, especially after a marked resurgence during the COVID pandemic, through the effective implementation of all applicable national laws, alongside education and awareness-rising campaigns, and services to victims.
  2. Enhance the meaningful participation of, and engagement with, Indigenous Peoples in the development and implementation of public policies affecting them, including with regard to national resource exploitation and territorial claims, in accordance with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
  3. Take meaningful steps to prohibit and prevent racial profiling in law enforcement to address discrimination against migrants, minorities, Afro-descendants and Indigenous Peoples.
