Thank you, Mr. President.

Canada strongly condemned the October 25th unconstitutional military takeover and called for the restoration of the transition to a civilian-led government. The subsequent unwarranted arrests and repression are unacceptable to Canada and to the broader international community. We stand alongside the Sudanese people in their call for a return to democratic transition and restoration of the transition process, and for an immediate end to all forms of violence being committed against protesters, including sexual and gender-based violence.

Canada supported the November 5th resolution of the Human Rights Council to appoint a Designated Expert to monitor the human rights situation in Sudan.

Canada recommends that Sudan:

1. Take concrete steps to fulfill the promise of the 2019 Constitutional Document and respect the rights of demonstrators.
2. Take measures to ensure justice for the families and survivors of the June 3, 2019 crackdown on peaceful protestors and those killed and injured since October 25, 2021, including survivors of sexual and gender based violence.
3. Ratify all articles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women without reservations.
4. Ratify the Optional Protocol and the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and take steps to ensure these measures are enshrined in Sudanese law.

The rapid resumption of a genuine and inclusive civilian-led transition process, as per Sudan's 2019 Constitutional Document and the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement, is paramount.
