Consultations to renew Canada’s International Assistance

The global context for Canada’s international assistance has evolved. While there has been good progress towards sustainable development and poverty reduction, new and complex challenges and opportunities require us to take a new approach.

On May 18, 2016 the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie announced a public review and consultations to renew Canada’s international assistance policy and funding framework. The new framework will help to refocus  Canada’s international assistance on helping the poorest and most vulnerable people, and supporting fragile states. It will also determine Canada’s approach internationally to supporting the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Women and girls will be at the heart of Canada’s  our new approach. We want to support them in their role as equal agents for change in their communities and countries.

The public consultations for the International Assistance Review closed on July 31, 2016. We engaged a wide range of Canadians and international partners, including Canadian NGOs, donor and partner governments, youth, people in developing countries, and experts in the field of international assistance.

More than 300 consultations were hosted in over 65 countries and at nine high-level events in five Canadian cities. Over 15,000 people and partners were engaged in the consultations, resulting in more than 10,600 written contributions.
