Canada's response to the crisis in Haiti

On March 3, 2024, the government of Haiti declared a state of emergency in Ouest Department, including Port-au-Prince, in response to gang violence and the deteriorating security situation. A nighttime curfew is in place, and the border with the Dominican Republic is closed.

Canadians remaining in Haiti who require emergency consular assistance should contact Global Affairs Canada's 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre directly and/or the Embassy of Canada to Haiti, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, whichever channel of communication is easier to access.

Political situation

Canada remains concerned about the humanitarian and security situation in Haiti and calls on all parties to work towards a return to stability. Canada welcomes the new Transitional Presidential Council and reiterates the importance of an effective transitional government that can ensure good governance, and work with the support of the international community, including Canada, to restore security and the rule of law, and ensure free and democratic elections as soon as possible.
