Canada’s response to flooding in Pakistan
In 2022, Pakistan experienced unprecedented rains and devastating floods that caused the death of more than 1,700 people and affected the lives of 33 million others across the country. Homes, roads, schools, health facilities and other critical infrastructure were destroyed, and livelihoods, livestock and crops were also severely affected.
How Canada is helping
On August 29, 2022, Canada announced $5 million in funding to help humanitarian partners provide life-saving services, including food assistance, water and sanitation, health interventions, and emergency cash and vouchers.
On September 13, 2022, Canada announced it would allocate an additional $28 million in funding to respond to the impact of the flooding and to support development projects in the country.
On January 9, 2023, Canada announced it had committed an additional $25 million in funding in response to the flooding. This funding would support development projects focused on recovery, reconstruction and resilience.
Through its Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund, Canada has provided additional funding for Pakistan, as well as making contributions through the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund and the World Health Organization’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies. Canada has also supported the provision of emergency relief items in Pakistan and the deployment of an expert from the Canadian Red Cross Society to Pakistan.
Matching fund
Recognizing the generosity of Canadians and their desire to assist those affected by the flooding, Canada launched a $3 million fund on September 13, 2022, to match money raised by the Humanitarian Coalition and its members. When the coalition and its members quickly raised over $3 million, the Government increased its commitment to $7.5 million. These funds helped deliver life-saving emergency food and nutrition assistance, emergency cash and vouchers, and necessary water, sanitation and health services.
Global Affairs Canada transferred the matching funds to the Humanitarian Coalition, which allocated the funds among its members based on criteria such as their capacity and presence in the affected region.
