Supporting young civic journalists in Northern Armenia

Recent political changes in Armenia, including the peaceful transition of power after historic elections in December 2018, have demonstrated the need for improved governance in the country. The new government is open to public engagement and consultation, and is sensitive to voices from civil society. However, those living in regions outside the capital do not always have the skills or the means to convey their concerns to decision-makers in an effective way.

Through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), Canada is working with Peace & Dialogue to train young Armenians in disadvantaged regions on the fundamentals of journalism. Working with high-quality professional trainers, 24 youth gained hands-on experience and skills in news reporting.

These budding journalists are developing multimedia stories on issues that are important in their communities. Moreover, the project is cultivating a future generation of trained, informed and engaged civic journalists.
