Kathy Bunka, Ambassador of Canada to Iraq

Kathy Bunka, Ambassador of Canada to Iraq

Message

It is my honour to be appointed Canada's Ambassador to the Republic of Iraq. As Canada’s representative in Iraq, I will work closely with the Government of Iraq to pursue our shared interests of stability, security and prosperity.

Since 2016, Canada, under the Middle East Strategy, has provided over $530 million in non-military assistance in support of stabilization, humanitarian and development assistance initiatives in Iraq. The goals are to foster economic growth, support the environment and climate action, promote the equality of women and men, support inclusive good governance and uphold human rights and dignity. In addition, Canada continues to contribute extensively to both the Global Coalition Against Daesh and the NATO Mission in Iraq.

I am grateful for the opportunity to experience Iraq’s rich history, culture, traditions and renowned hospitality, in close cooperation and friendship with team members in our offices in Erbil and Baghdad, and with Iraqis. The bilateral relationship is strong and is bolstered by a significant Iraqi diaspora community in Canada. These people to-people ties will be the basis for expanding political and commercial relationships in the years ahead.

For Canadians living in Iraq, I encourage you to sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad to ensure that we can contact you in the event of an emergency.

Finally, I encourage all of you interested in discovering more about Canada and Iraq to follow us on X (Twitter):

I look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the years ahead.
