Media Freedom Coalition Statement on the Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh

September 16, 2022 – Ottawa (Ontario) – Global Affairs Canada

“Four months after the death of veteran Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, the undersigned members of the Media Freedom Coalition continue to strongly condemn her killing in the West Bank and to call for accountability. Freedom of expression, press freedom and the safety of journalists and media workers are indispensable to the flourishing of free, pluralistic, inclusive and democratic societies. Shireen Abu Akleh’s death is a tragic loss and an affront to media freedom everywhere.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Shireen Abu Akleh’s family and loved ones. The use of force against mourners during her funeral procession was wholly unacceptable and rightly attracted widespread condemnation. Every family deserves to lay their loved ones to rest in a dignified and unimpeded manner.

“It is of paramount importance that attacks on members of the media are thoroughly investigated and that those found responsible are held accountable.

“The Media Freedom Coalition continues to promote media freedom, a bedrock of democracy and human rights, and to protect the ability of journalists and media workers to carry out their work without fear of violence, intimidation and threats to their lives or safety. We call upon all states and other actors to hold to account those who jeopardize the safety of journalists and media workers.”
