Why is Canada holding consultations on a possible Canada-MERCOSUR FTA?

We want to hear from you. We need to hear your ideas, your experiences, and your priorities through these consultations.

These consultations will seek the views of Canadians to help define Canada’s interests in a possible free trade agreement, and identify opportunities for such an agreement to create wealth, innovation and jobs for Canadians.

What will be the focus of consultations?

The focus of consultations is to determine how Canada should best proceed regarding a possible FTA with MERCOSUR. This would include how to best improve market access, legal certainty and transparency for Canadian business, but also to understand any other related issues and concerns that are relevant when considering a possible FTA.

A Canada Gazette notice on consultations on a possible Canada-MERCOSUR FTA provides background information on this initiative, and lists areas for which the government is seeking your views.

What is the deadline for consultation submissions?

The submission period for the Canada Gazette notice will last 30 days, and end on May 29, 2017. The Government of Canada is committed to hearing from Canadians on this important subject and will ensure that Canadians continue to have the opportunity to provide their views as we engage with MERCOSUR, including through our ongoing consultation efforts.

How do I participate?

The government is seeking the views of all interested Canadians. There are different ways you can participate in these consultations.

Public Consultation Process for Canadians on a potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and MERCOSUR

Personal information collected by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is protected from disclosure to unauthorized persons and/or agencies subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act. Individuals have the right to the protection of and access to their personal information and to request corrections where the individual believes there is an error or omission. Individuals may exercise these rights by contacting GAC’s Access to Information and Privacy Protection Division at dcp@international.gc.ca.

Individuals also have the right to file a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding GAC’s handling of their personal information.

The information you provide to GAC during this consultation process will be used for the purpose of identifying the views and interests of the Canadian public and Canadian stakeholders on a potential free trade agreement with MERCOSUR. This will help to inform the Government of Canada's interests on the expansion of trade and investment with MERCOSUR.  The personal information you provide may also be used to follow up with you regarding your submission. GAC will not use your personal information for any secondary purpose without first obtaining your explicit consent.

The information is collected under the authority of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act, sections 10(2)(d) and 10(2)(e).

Provision of the information requested is voluntary and you may, without prejudice, decline to participate. Should you decide to provide your opinion(s), it is important to know that your submission constitutes your consent to the collection, use and disclosure of the information by GAC. The personal information you provide may be shared with other Canadian federal government departments that are working with GAC for the purpose of ensuring a common Government of Canada approach to a potential free trade agreement between Canada and MERCOSUR.

Your personal information will be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act and will be retained for ten years and then destroyed. Your information will be stored in the standard personal information bank for Outreach Activities, (PSU) 938.
